复旦大学创建于1905年，原名复旦公学。“复旦”二字选自《尚书大传·虞夏传》中‘旧月光华，旦复旦兮”的名句，意在自强不息，寄托当时中国知识分子自主办学、教育强国的希望。一个世纪以来，尤其是通过国家教育部和上海市共同建设，复旦大学逐步发展成为一所人文科学、社会科学、自然科学、技术科学以及管理科学在内的多科性研究型国家重点综合大学。
nitially known as“Fudan Public SchoolFudan University was founded in the year 190S。“Fudan”，literally meaning“‘(heavenly light shines)day after day"，indicates inexhaustible self-reliance and industriousness. After a century of construction，especially with the joint efforts of the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Government，Fudan University has gradually developed into a multi-discipline，research-oriented，state key and comprehensive university of humanity science，social science，natural science，technical science and management science.
复旦大学位于太平洋西海岸的中国最富吸引力的大都市上海市。学校目前占地面积252万平方米，校舍建筑面积111万平方米。学校现有各类实验室134个，其中5个国家重点实验室，20个省部级重点实验室。
Located on the west coast of the Pacific Fudan University lies in Shanghai，the most dynamic metropolis in China. It now occupies an area of 2.52 million square meters with a floor space up to 1 .1million square meters. Fudan University has 134 laboratories of all kinds，including 5 state key laboratories and 20 provincial or ministerial key laboratories.
复旦大学图书馆始建于1922年，前身为戊午阅览室(1918 )。现在有文理医3个图书馆组成，建筑面积29000平方米，现有藏书445万册，居全国高校前列。
Fudan University Library was formally established in 1922，previously known as the Reading Room of Wu Vllu(the year 1918).Today it comprises the Liberal Arts Library，the Science Library and the nlledical Library，with its total floor space being 29000 square meters. There is a total collection of 4.4 million volumes，which ranks the first of all national universities.
学校现有17个学院(含66个系)和4个系68个学士学位专业，硕士学位授权点209个(其中自设38个)，一级学科博士学位授权点22个，二级学科博士学位授权点135个(其中自设24个)，并设有25个博士后科研流动站。
Fudan consists of seventeen schools(which comprise sixty-six departments)and four independent departments. The University confers bachelor's degrees in sixty-eight academic disciplines，and master's degrees in two hundred and nine disciplines(with thirty-eight of them established by the University itself)，and doctonal degrees in twenty-two academic disciplines of Level I and one hundred and thirty-five academic disciplines of Level II(with fiwenty-four of them established by the University ifiself).There are also twenty-five research stations that offer postdoctoral fellowships.
学校现有各类学生近44300余人，其中博士生3500人，硕士生 7500余人，普通本专科生15 '}00余人，外国留学生2200余人，成人教育本专科生8400人，网络教育本专科生近7000人。
Fudan now has an enrollment of 44300 students of all kinds，including 3 50U doctoral candidates，7 500 master's candidates15700 undergraduates，2200 foreign students 8400 students of adult education and nearly 7000 students of online education.
学校拥有一支高水平的师资队伍，现有专任教师一与科研人员2300余人，其中教授、副教授1350余人，中国科学院、中国工程院院士30人，博士生导师746人，教育部“长江学者奖励计划”特聘教授40人、讲座教授14人，"973 "首席科学家6人，“国家级有突出贡献中青年专家”31人‘:近几年来，学校积极引进人才，实施教育一部“长江学者奖励计划”，涌现出一批优秀的中青年教师，优化了师资队伍结构。学校还拥有中山、华山等9个附属医院，集医疗服务、临床教学与科研工作于一体。
Fudan boasts a qualified faculty of over 2 300 full-time teachers and researchers，including 1 350 full professors and associate professors，30 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering，746 doctoral advisors，40 chair professors and 14 lecture professors of the “Cheungkong Scholars Program”，6 chief scientists of“Project 973”and 31“Young and Middle-Aged Experts Nationally Acknowledged for Their Outstanding Achievements”.In the recent years，the University has been proactive in recruiting youthful strengths and optimizing the echelon of its faculty. Fudan has nine teaching hospitals，such as Zhong-shan(Dr. Sun Yat-san)Hospital and Hua-shan Hospital，which offer quality medical service to the general public，conduct clinical education to student doctors and perform advanced scientific researches.

At the threshold of a new century and with the special funding from both the state Ministry of Education and Shanghai Government，Fudan University has set its goal of building a world-renowned，research-oriented comprehensive university，which is located in Shanghai while serving the whole country.

Giorious History
1905年复旦大学创建，原名复旦公学。
1905 Initially known as“Fudan Public School”，Fudan University was founded
1917年复旦公学改名为私立复旦大学。
1917 Fudan Public School was renamed Public Fudan University.
1937年抗日战争爆发后，学校内迁重庆北暗
1937 After the breakout of the Anti-Japanese War，the university moved to hinterland Chongqing.
1946年学校迁回上海江湾原址。
1946 The University moved back to Shanghai.
1952年全国高校院系调整，复旦大学的院系进行了大幅度的调整
1952 A nationwide restructuring of institutes of higher education was initiated，and the university undertook a great adjustment of its schools and departments.
2000年上海医科大学与复旦大学合并，成立新的复旦大学。
2000 Shanghai Medical Universifiy and Fudan University merged to form a new Fudan University.
