北京理工大学是“理工为主，工理文协调发展”的全国重点大学。其前身是1940年创办的延安自然科学院，是我国首批颁布的全国重点大学，是全国首批建立研究生院的高校
是“一七五 八五”和“九五”期间国家重点投资建设的学校，也是国家首批“211工程”建设的高校

学校现有教职工3500名，其中中国科学院院士4名、中国工程院院士10名，教授、副教授(含研究员、高级工程师)1431名，博士生导师257名，国家有突出贡献中青年专家11名，长江学者奖励计划”特聘教授6名，享受政府津贴专家251名
There are over 3500 faculty and staff，including 4 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)and 10 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE)，1431 full and associate professors(including researchers and senior engineers)，257 supervisors of doctorate programs 17 experts with outstanding contributions at the national level，5 special professors of“Cheungkong Scholars Program”and 251 recipients of special subsidies from the central government.
学校每年承担科研项目超过1000项，科研经费每年都有大幅度增长，有3个国家级重点实验室、9个国家重点学科、专业实验室、一个教育部开放实验室、5个北京市重点实验室。

2006年全校各类在校学生36533人，其中本科生13627人，，专科生1479人，硕士生5088人人、博士生2104人、留学生364人、远程教育和继续教育学生近13 871人。60多年来为国家培养了125156名各类高层次人才。
学校重视开展国内和国际交流与合作，与29个国家和地区的90余所高校建立了校际合作关系。
BIT attaches great importance to the communication and cooperation domestitally and internationally and has established relationship with more than 90 universities in 29 countries and districts.
为了加强师资力量，学校在国内聘请了174名特聘教授、38名客座教授、6名荣誉教授，在国外聘请了45名特聘教授和12名荣誉教授。学校按照建设高水平研究型大学的目标，面向现代化，面向世界，面向未来”，坚持对外开放，深化改革，与时俱进。

Glorious History
1939年北京理工大学的前身—延安自然科学院成立。
In 1939，Yan'an Academy of Natural Science，the predecessor of BIT was founded
1945年1月延安自然科学院改名为晋察冀边区工业专门学校。
In January 1946，Yan'an Academy of Natural Science was renamed Jin-Cha-Ji Remote Area Industrial College.
1948年10月晋察冀边区工业专门学校与北方大学工学院合并，成立华北大学工学院。
In October 1948，the Engineering College of North-China University was founded on the basis of the merging of Jin-Cha-Ji Remote Area Industrial College and the Engineering College of Northern University
1949年8月华北大学工学院迁人北京。
In August 1949，the Engineering College of North-China University moved to Beijing
1951年11月18日华北大学工学院改名为北京工业学院。
On November 18，1951，Engineering College of North-China University was renamed Beijing Institute ofTechnology(BIT).
1959年中央政府批准北京工业学院为全国首批16所重点院校之一
In 1959，BiT was designated as one of the sixteen key universities in China bythe central government
1988年4月2日北京工业学院更名为北京理工大学。
In 1988，the institution changed its Chinese name from“Institute" to“University" with the English name remaining unchanged.
1995年12月北京理工大学被批准为“211工程”大学之一。
In December 1995，BIT was ratified by the central government as one of the Project 211”universities.
