Gonggong Knocked Down the Mountain
共工毁山
The rebellion of Gonggong the water god mirrors in a way the rebellion of the suppressed in human society.
水神共工的反抗反映了人类社会对于镇压的抵抗。
When the world was made, heaven and earth were not completely separated.
世界刚建成之时，天和地还没有完全分开。
There was still a ladder connecting them.
它们之间仍然被梯子连接着。
Gods of heaven and earth could climb up and down to communicate and enjoy themselves.
天地之间的神仙可以通过梯子爬上爬下，过得很开心。
Also ，some brave common people sometimes managed to climb up to heaven.
同时，一些勇敢的普通人也想要爬上天界。
Zhuanxu the God of North Heaven was not happy about this.
北方天帝颛顼看见这个情况不太开心。
To him it was not good to mix up the world of gods and that of the common people.
对他来说，天界和人界互相混合是很不好的事情。
There was too much confusion.

He wanted to pull down the heavenly ladder to cut off the touch of the two worlds.

When this was done, all gods were happy about it.

Therefore, Zhuanxu became very popular because he protected the interests of the gods.

He was very satisfied with himself.

Pride goes before, and shame follows after.
骄必招辱。
Zhuanxu followed his own will.
颛顼一意孤行。
He had all the stars and planets arranged in the northern sky in his territory, so he offended the gods.
因为他将所有的星星和星球都安放在他自己管辖的北方天空中，所以冒犯了诸神。
Out of touch with the earthly world, he no longer knew the people and their suffering.
由于太久没有与人间接触，他不再了解人民和他们的疾苦。
What’s more, he set up many rules of conduct against the thoughts and feelings of the people.
不仅如此，他还设立了许多规定来限制人们的思想和感受。
One such rule was that women should make way for men whenever they met on the way.
其中一条规定是，当人们在路上相遇时，女人必须为男人让路。
Another was that brother and sister should never marry.
另一条规定要求兄妹不能通婚。
Zhuanxu became despotic and obstinate.
颛顼变得专制和固执。
Many gods were very angry， some of them headed by Gonggong rose up in revolt.
许多神仙对此非常生气，他们中的一些在共工的带领下起义反抗。
This Gonggong was god of water.
共工是水神。
Defeated, the desperate Gonggong knocked down the Buzhou Mountain, which happened to be one of the four pillars of the sky, the one in the west.
战败后，绝望的共工推倒了天界的四大支柱之一——西边的不周山。
The mountain fell apart, the sky collapsed.
山倒了，天崩了。
The world ruled by Zhuanxu was disrupted.
由颛顼掌管的世界陷入了混乱之中。
Horrible disasters followed.
恐怖的灾难接连发生。
The western sky fell, sinking holes in the earth；the earth in the east sank, cracking to produce gaps；
西边的天塌了，把地面砸出了大坑；东边的地面下沉，形成了裂纹；
floods shot up from the cracks and holes； rains poured down； seas rose； rivers rose；
洪水自沟壑和地洞中喷涌而出；天降大雨；海面上升；河水暴涨；
the sky could no longer cover the earth； the earth submerged，it could no longer carry all the creatures；
天空无法再覆盖住地面；地面沉入了水中，生灵涂炭；
woods were on fire, the sun was overshadowed by thick smoke； fierce animals became rampage，preying on humans---- What a hell of life!
树木着火；太阳被浓厚的烟雾遮蔽；凶猛的动物变得暴怒，开始捕食人类——这简直是一片人间地狱！
Nuwa would not allow this to continue.
女娲不允许这件事再继续恶化下去。
She came out to save the world and repair the sky, which is the concern of the next section.
她出面拯救世界并补好了天空，这就是下一段所讲的故事。
