爱德华·埃斯特林·卡明斯（e. e. cummings, 1894–1962）是美国诗人、作家。他拥有哈佛大学的文学硕士学位，第一次世界大战期间，曾参加救护车队在法国战地工作，进过集中营，后把这段经历写进他的第一部小说《巨大的房间》。他共出版了13本诗集，当时在国内拥有众多读者，仅次于Robert Frost。本诗是卡梅隆·迪亚茨在电影《偷穿高跟鞋》中姐姐的婚礼上朗读过，用以表达妹妹对姐姐的祝福和爱。诗原本表达的是失去挚爱后的坚贞与思念。情势不同，但相通的是，爱让生命延续。
