Tianjin as a military stronghold of ancient Beijing gradually grew into a city through history from the Sui Dynasty on,when the Great Cannel was built, to the prime time of the Tang Dynasty when Tianjin became a hub of communications for rice and cloth. In the Tongzhi Reign of the Qing Dynasty, the governor of Beijing and Tianjin cities and minister of Northern China were both stationed in Tianjin. Tianjin became the center of modernization campaign of Northern China and the base for developing capitalist industries.
