At first, movies pleased people just because the experience of watching them was new. Trains dashed toward the camera, crowds walked a- long the avenues of distant cities, soldiers marched, waterfalls dashed over rocks, and everyone was delighted. There, in the black and white shadow one could see larger-than-life images of reality—and they moved! But images alone cannot keep people interested for ever. Within a few years, such motion pictures became less popular. Film producers had to begin searching for new ideas to win back the crowds.
起初，电影让人们开心只是因为看电影新奇。火车冲向摄像机，遥远城市的人群走过长长的林荫大道，士兵们在行军，瀑布冲过岩石，大家都非常高兴。在黑色和白色的影子里，一眼就可以看出降幅高于现实生活的图像，他们被感动着！但是仅仅有图像不让人们一直感兴趣。。几年之内，这样的电影变得不那么受欢迎。电影制片人开始寻找新的思路，以赢回观众。
