Many pieces of pottery of the primitive society were excavated from China's Yellow and Yangtze river valleys, notably the Yangshao, Majiayao，Dawenkou and Longshan cultures of the Yellow River valley and the Hemudu, Daxi，Qujialing and Liangzhu cultures of the Yangtze River valley over 6 000 years ago. Painted pottery gradually fell out of favor, while black, white, gray, and red pottery continued to develop and change in the succeeding period of time.
